It is no longer a secret that FC Barcelona are interested in signing Atletico Madrid's Forward Antoine Greizmann. The French International has largely impressed since he joined Atletico from Real Sociedad for a fee in the region of €30m in 2014. According to reports, Greizmann's release clause will drop to just €100m in the summer. For a player of his calibre that would be a steal.
Business-wise, i feel signing Greizmann would be a masterpiece, The problem however, is that currently he isn't needed at Barca. Barcelona already boast of a start studded attacking unit comprising of Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi, Ousmane Dembélé, Phillipe Coutinho, (Jose Arnaiz). Even when Barcelona play with a front three with all the attackers starting Phillipe Coutinho is usually asked to play in his less favored position (Center midfield). With four reliable attackers, why do Barcelona need another young Attacker?
One might argue he will replace Suarez, truth be told Suarez still has one or two more good seasons in him, will 27 year old Greizmann sit for two years waiting for Suarez to leave? No.
Another option is sell or loan out Dembélé; if that happens what's the point in splashing €105m + add-ons on a player and then sell him for much cheaper the following season, If Dembélé leaves, the Greizmann deal, wouldn't be good business-wise.
Another might say he will add depth to the squad, Yes he certainly will, but Greizmann isn't the kind of player who is going to play a bit-part role he's a starter. In the end he'll be unhappy and leave.
The 'Nuclear option' is to sell Suarez and sign him; the disadvantage here is that he isn't really the conventional striker that Luis Suarez is, Greizmann usually drops deep to join in the build up and he isn't as strong physically as Suarez. My verdict is that Barcelona shouldn't sign Antoine Greizmann, if it were last summer it would have made sense, but now it absolutely does not make sense.
